The story of Max and Chloe keeps you engaged until the very end, and the rewind mechanic makes choices more interesting and allows you to experiment with different outcomes. Max and Chloe are given room to breathe, to be annoying, to be funny, to feel like real people before the game starts asking you to make decisions that actually matter, breathing room its successors particularly Life is Strange 2 refused to provide. The Kate scene is perhaps the clearest demonstration of this. Heavy-handed in its messaging, yes, but by that point you are genuinely invested enough that the weight of that scene lands. The fact that the game remembers her afterward, giving you a quiet moment with her in the hospital, shows a care for its characters that the later entries frequently abandon.
