Steam has dropped a free alternative to Nintendo’s beloved Mario Kart, and it comes complete with free multiplayer support. Wahoo!

When it comes to popular kart racers, it probably doesn't get more popular than Nintendo’s Mario Kart series, which has been with us since its launch on the SNES, all the way back in 1992. Yes, it’s really been around for that long.

Fast-approaching its 35th year of existence, it’s incredible that even to this day, and despite launching on every Nintendo console generation since 1992, the Mario Kart franchise is arguably more popular than it's ever been.

Sadly, We Can't Play Mario Kart on PC

Well, that’s not entirely true; there are unofficial means, but I’ll leave it at that. However, that’s not to say that there aren't Mario Kart-inspired alternatives, because there most certainly are. Such as the topic of today’s article.

The Mario Kart alternative in question is the free-to-play Steam game, Kart Attack, developed by Team Warhorse. What’s especially interesting about this game is that it features good old, split-screen co-op, a form of multiplayer that seems to be somewhat lost in this current generation.

“Welcome to Kart Attack, one of the most thrilling racing experiences you can get your hands on,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.

“With a selection of fantastic tracks and a cast of karts each with a unique style and ability, you and up to three friends (or CPU competitors if you like a challenge) battle for domination of the race. Use power-ups and your kart's special ability to get an edge over your opponents and, hopefully, avoid the return fire.”

Kart Attack features a variety of modes, such as a tournament, time trial, quick race, as well as five tracks, nine karts, unlockable skins and more.

Going off the gameplay trailer on Steam, Kart Attack looks like it could be fun. The visuals won’t blow you away, but it gives me major PlayStation 2 vibes, which is always comforting. Plus, it’s a totally free game, so there is that.

At the time of writing, Kart Attack has four Steam user reviews, all of which recommend the game. Yet, the review from Hellboy probably puts it best by saying, “Is it pretty? No. Is it polished? Also, no. Is it fun? Surprisingly, yes!”

So, you might as well give Kart Attack a chance and who knows, you might be pleasantly surprised.
